About Us

Nyland School is a specialist primary school for pupils with SEMH need. The Nyland School community includes a pupil referral unit on the school site; an outreach team based at The White Horse Federation Mountford Manor site, who work within mainstream schools in the borough; and a therapy team.

At Nyland School, we aim to build an ethos of emotional awareness and understanding, known as emotional quotient, before intellectual quotient in order to promote relevant and sustained development of the ‘whole child’. This facilitates the outcome of nurturing valued and productive members of communities and society.

We use a curriculum that is directly designed to meet both emotional and academic need appropriately for our cohort. This combined approach includes a deep understanding of social, emotional, and mental health need and how this impacts on emotional wellbeing and academic learning. It takes into account that pupils need both therapeutic and academic input in a combined, systemic way.

This is underpinned by creating an environment that promotes a feeling of belonging, of being connected to others, and of ‘relatedness’. Staff build and model secure, healthy relationships that pupils can learn from and recreate in their lives after and beyond school. It is upon this foundation that pupils can build their learning.

Our staff are empowered to facilitate this approach to the curriculum through robust training with-built in sustainability through long-term investment in the specialist training and development of staff.

The school offers enrichment activities including horse riding, yoga, swimming, outdoor pursuits, SkillsForce activities, arts and crafts, cooking, Forest schools, and DT projects.

Our classes are small with a high adult-to-pupil ratio in order to meet specific need, and we begin each day with ‘morning mindfulness’ and celebrate the diverse and unique qualities our pupils bring to each new day.

Our Vision

  • To provide one ‘pathway’ for Swindon’s mainstream schools and settings to access support for SEMH pupils. To provide advice, intervention groups, training, and, where appropriate, short-term dual placements or long-term provision at Nyland School.
  • To promote an inclusive education ethos that supports primary schools and early year’s settings to successfully include pupils with social, emotional, and mental health issues.
  • To ensure an equal responsibility between home, school, pupil, and the local authority in bringing about positive and lasting change.
  • To facilitate experiences and learning that promotes emotional intelligence through an integrated emotional quotient curriculum and to teach the learning skills necessary for successful engagement, motivation, and thinking in order for pupils to progress in life and learning and become good citizens.
  • To set high expectations that believe in pupils’ potential while understanding their need.
  • To provide pupils with the opportunity for mainstream experience when it becomes appropriate to do so.
  • To help parents feel safe and welcome in school through family-orientated activities that encourage parent and child cooperation and positive engagement in the child’s emotional progress, skills, and learning.
  • To provide and match therapeutic input that is appropriate and relevant for the individual pupil and that is part of a ‘joined-up service’ where all professionals involved with the pupil share information that will ensure progress that involves the ‘whole child’.

The White Horse Federation

The White Horse Federation, made in Swindon, founded in 2012

The White Horse Federation is a Multi Academy Trust of primary schools, secondary and special schools. The federation grew from a passion to be collaborative in providing a first class education to a wide range of children so that each one could more fully understand what they were capable of, what talents they had and to strive for excellence in themselves in order to succeed in the next phase of their education and in the world of work.
